The Struggles of Our Time: A Poetic Commentary

This is a “poem” I wrote back in 2007. It was more of a commentary of the state of the world at the time. And has gotten worse in the decades since. Not so much on our connection to nature but what we do impacts the world. It is up to us, both individually and collectively, to make this world a better place.

Everyday I wake up with a sense of powerlessness.

Everyday, the headlines of war, oppression, death and destruction.

Everyday, the news of earthquakes, eruptions, tidal waves and tornadoes.

Powerless to do anything, I sit paralysed!
The gap between the rich and poor gets greater every second.

Food gets wasted when a block away, people go to bed hungry.

Designer clothing on one street while a street away only tattered and torn clothing are found.

Where, oh where, is the equality!
The earth shook and buildings tumble.

The rich can run while the poor have to stay.

No roof over their heads, no floor beneath their feet, how do they survive?

Where, oh where, is humanity!

First world countries lament of declining and aging population.

Third world countries cry out of the numbers of children dying.

Yet each are trying to protect their borders and own interest.

Where, oh where, is the balance!

War and destruction abound,

Death comes for the innocent and the aggressors alike.

Parents mourn their children and kids are left orphaned.

Where, oh where, do the responsibilities lie!
